Olivia Munn shows off mastectomy scars in new topless Skims campaign
Olivia Munn, a breast cancer survivor, is flaunting her body after mastectomy.
The actor, an ambassador for Skims, is featured in the brand’s most recent bra collection with Susan G. Komen and the photos depict her double mastectomy scars.
The 44-year old is happy with how the pictures came out and shared with the co-anchor of “TODAY,” Savannah Guthrie, that from what the creators of the shoot intended, things went in the complete opposite.
“When Skims reached out to me to work with them on this campaign, it was just going to be to focused their shapewear line and the new leggings they had come out with, and my scar was never part of the conversation,” Kotb said during an interview on the TODAY show on Wednesday.
As Munn was stripping to a different costume, she wore something that would expose even more of her scar and a makeup artist present on set began applying makeup on her scars, however, it was “just really really hard,” she said.
“And then I was looking at the mirror one day and I was like, ‘I am tired of being ashamed of my scars,” Munn said. “My group has been working with a specific team of Skims and I asked them all, ‘How does this team feel about revealing my scars in this campaign?’ And they were so good and caring and lovely. And we discussed it and we agreed to do it.”
Munn who began noticing symptoms of breast cancer when she was diagnosed of luminal B in April, 2023 has undergone surgeries. In an interview with People earlier this year, she revealed that she underwent “a lymph node dissection, a nipple delay procedure (a surgical procedure which spares the nipples) and a double mastectomy.”
Also, the star took implants for her breast and commenced on hormone treatments that led to early menopause. Munn also had her ovary, uterus and fallopian tubes also removed.
When asked about it after her latest photo shoot, Munn stated that it was “really scary,” but she is glad she did it.
“I think this one has been something I have been trying to keep to my own self for the longest time now, I just feel like Now I can breathe a little,” she said.
Mother of two also said of her dreams of wishing to encourage other women embrace their beauty.
“Knowing that there are so many women that have these same scares as me, I know that so many of them feel the same way I felt about them for so long. And I hope that they see the Skims campaign,” she said. “Skims is such legends and it has that beauty and sex appeal appeal to it and cancer does not feel the same. So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it.”
Munn first discovered her 37% lifetime risk of breast cancer when a doctor input her data for her breast cancer risk assessment score during a standard OB-GYN check up.
Speaking with Guthrie, the former star of “The Newsroom” asked women to assess the potential risks of getting breast cancer and be active in defending one’s health.
“What I have learnt is this … you have to go to your doctor and you tell them everything and don’t let them get a word in edgeways until they give you the test you want,” she said.
