Memphis area high school football rankings: See who made the poll in Week 4
The third week of the TSSAA high school football season was the first time that the majority of region rivalries in the Memphis area took place, as well as it should have been. Among the top ten teams in The Commercial Appeal, the teams were subject to upsets, fourth-quarter magic and blowouts.
Below is The Commercial Appeal’s Memphis area, high school football rankings entering Week 4.
Houston (3-0, 1-0 in Region 8-6A): Houston won arguably its biggest test of the regular season, beating Germantown in a four-quarter battle in the rival’s gymnasium. The veteran Mustangs are right on course to schedule their way to a national championship. Last week: No. 1. This week: vs. Cordova.
Southwind (3-0): Down by as many eleven points in the first quarter, Jaguars outclassed Center Hill of Mississippi. The gunslinging quarterback did it on the ground with 180 yards and 2 TD’s in the 34-17 victory. Last week: No. 2. This week: vs. Munford.
Collierville (3-0, 1-0): Collierville’s wins to the first two weeks of the games may not have caused any major ripples, but that of last Friday did. The Dragons won their Region 8-6A matchup with Bartlett, 29-19, in a game in which Collierville was ahead by two scores for virtually the entire game. Some of this team could be louder in 6A. Last week: No. 6. This week: vs. Douglass.
Germantown (2-1, 1-1): Red Devils’ 36-30 loss to Houston should not rule them out in Tennessee’s 6A class. As much as they are young, Germantown’s team is deep with talent that is capable of competing with anyone long term. Last week: No. 4. This week: at Riverdale.
Covington (3-0, 1-0 in Region 7-3A): Covington’s run-focused offense keeps building them more comfortable victories, and in this 30-15 win over Dyersburg behind 213 rushing yards from Skylan Smith. Last week: No. 5. This week: in the Scotts Hill neighbourhood.
Bartlett (1-1, 0-1): Perhaps Bartlett failure to open its campaign on a good footing against Collierville was due to an unplanned vacation in Week 2. The Panthers tried to spoil the party with 13 points in the last period but are still one of the hardest teams for Memphis to beat but a region title is still harder to come into into now. Last week: No. 3. This week: vs. Arlington.
Fairley (2-0): It was not a week of high powered scoring on the field as far as Fairley’s defense was concerned. Quarterback Andrew Johnson has shown good stats up to the second game, where he has completed 541 yards and 9 TD. Last week: No. 8. This week: vs. Oakhaven.
Lausanne (1-0): Lausanne has been out of the field for two consecutive weeks now, Week 2 was rainy and last week was a by week. If what was seen in week 1 is anything to go by, then the Lynx is well capable of positioning itself amongst the cream in the state’s DII-AA category specifically with TJ Jenkins and Jawell Rodgers in the offense. Last week: No. 7. This week: A game that was played between New Hope High school and; Evangelical Christian School.
Whitehaven (2-1, 1-0): Whitehaven enters the rankings for the first time this year on the back of a 39-24 victory over Arlington. Another dynamite performer has been the running back Christopher Talley, who as rushed for 341 yards and five touchdowns last week. Last week: Not ranked. This week: involving the clash between West Side Story and White Station.
Munford (2-1): In a closely fought game Melrose launched a last gasp effort against the Cougars and only a last throw field goal made the margin of 33-32 in favor of the Cougars. Running game has been an area of strength for Munford as a teams especially in the early parts of the season. Last week: Not ranked. This week: at Southwind.
