High school football rankings: Defending California state champion Mater Dei headlines 2024 Preseason

It is the fifth straight year that Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif. ) starts the season as the MaxPreps Top 25-high ranked high school football team. The Monarchs are coming off 13-1 season and Open Division state championship, which was the fourth in the last seven seasons.

Orange County power house has a substitution change that occurs at the sideline. Raul Lara of Long Beach Poly (Long Beach), with a record of 142-30 and five section crowns from 2001-13, thus takes over from Frank McManus in that regard.

Mater Dei returns a lot of experience, however, the question at quarterback is a huge one to fill. Consider Elijah Brown who notched a record of forty two wins and only two losses and two titles in sign as the starting signal caller in four years. Senior Washington promise is Dash Beierly comes in after amassing over 2,500 yards of total offense with 29 touchdowns at Chaparral (Temecula) last year.

Bowman alongside Jordon Davison, a senior running back who is committed to the University of Oregon and wide receivers Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, Marcus Harris who committed to the University of Oklahoma, and Chris Henry Jr. , who committed to Ohio State are there to help Beierly with targets. Sione Tohi, Kodi Greene and Lex Mailangi of Arizona are some of the well-known stars that spearhead what remains one of the best known and successful linemen fronts in the country.

The Monarchs could be even more stacked on the other side of the dash.

On the front side, the key seniors are defensive end Abduall Sanders Jr. bound for Alabama along with Shaun Scott, Semi Taulanga, Tomu Topui, and Nasir Wyatt who is committed to the University of Oregon. Daryus Dixson of Penn State, Danny Lang, C. J. Lavender, Chuck McDonald III of Alabama make up a very strong secondary.

Mater Dei is accompanied by five other squads out of California in the starting of the MaxPreps Top 25. Coming into the season all five of these schools, St. John Bosco (Bellflower), Centennial (Corona), Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), Orange Lutheran (Orange), and Folsom are ranked nationally.

However, what can be rather downplayed is that seven Florida teams are included in the preseason rating despite the fact that the Golden State is adequately represented as well.

Those teams that have qualified for the match are IMG Academy (Bradenton), Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Cocoa, Central (Miami), American Heritage (Plantation) and Berkeley Prep (Tampa).
