Watch Dua Lipa and Mark Ronson Show How ‘Dance the Night,’ From ‘Barbie,’ Was Made

A disco-influenced song like Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster summer film “Barbie” might seem effortless, but the songwriter has put in a lot of hard work to create a song that captures the spirit of the film. But, it was quite the opposite as we can see from the latest "Behind the Scene" video on Variety. It shows her and Mark Ronson, the producer, and the co-writer of the song, talking about the creation of the song and playing individual instrumental and vocal tracks.

I mean, “‘Barbie’ completely took over our lives — we were completely Barb-ified,” according to Dua. “We were putting post-it notes everywhere, trying to brainstorm what ‘Dance the Night’ was going to be.”

The music video for "Dance the Night" was made during a break from the Future Nostalgia tour of Dua Lipa. The filmmakers spent several days coming up with edited scenes that worked well with the choreography and action sequences. They watched a dance scene from the film and took inspiration from it.

"We had to rewrite 'Dance the Night' numerous times in order to align with the picture," as stated by Ronson in a recent interview with Variety. “Dua Lipa was so innovative in creating the lyrics for the song 'Come along for the ride' during the scene where Margo shows that 'come-hither thing' with her fingers. They chose that moment deliberately as it was perfect to perform that song.”

However, for the tune to fit the setting, it needs to have a faint disturbing tone to it, so we could get the hint that Barbie’s world isn’t as perfect as it seems.

He says that the harmonious chords give the tune a dark and gloomy arrangement. Additionally, he adds that, the essential element of the tune structure includes an electric piano along with a distorted and eerie string section as opposed to the joyful disco strings, giving it a sense of mystery and enigma.

I must say, I was really taken aback by the fact that there is an acoustic guitar part in the mix which is helping to drive the rhythm of the song.
