The Idol Wins Emmy Despite Backlash and Cancellation

The Idol may have been one of the most provocative shows that have ever been made at the HBO network, but now, the series has become an Emmy winner.

During the second night of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, the series took home the award for choreography for scripted programming; choreographer Nina McNeely’s work triumphing over Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale and Physical. What this means is that The Idol which was a show that lasted only one season has more Emmy awards than critically acclaimed shows like The Wire that was nominated for the Emmys twice and Better Call Sue that had 53 nominations with no wins.

In July, McNeely spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her award nomination for The Idol, the only show nominated this year: “Honestly, I was quite surprised But I am just over the moon and so excited and so honored to be recognized for my work, of course, but also to be in the group with the other nominees because they are all so talented. ” ”

McNeely also acknowledged that the critics that the series garnered is what made her believe that The Idol wouldn’t be nominated, plus it being her first TV project. “I have shot films, I have been in music videos and tours and things like that, I wasn’t preparing for one my first time shooting a TV show. ” “But there were really, really long takes of the dance and it was so much a feature of the ‘Dollhouse’ episode that I was crossing my fingers. ” ”

When the news of her nomination was out, McNeely said she was emotional and let a tear or two roll, she had to call her agent immediately and share the news with her family as well. “It was really amazing,” she added.

In August 2023 HBO officially stated that The Idol was not going to proceed any further this decision was taken perhaps due to the backlash from the critics and the mass especially the reactions from the viewers. This decision was rather thought through and no new season of the show will be created both by HBO and the producers of the series: ‘After careful consideration, for HBO, the creators, and the producers, there will be no second season… We are thankful to the creators, cast and crew for their tremendous efforts. ’

When Behind the Music gave Planet Earth II to hostile reporters, “creative differences” were cited for the series’s cancellation, but according to Rolling Stone magazine, it is because internal issues concerning the production included rewriting the story from a young woman breaking free, regaining her voice after being caged in toxic relations in the music industry, to what was portrayed by the series as an exploitative love story. After the investigation, The Idol lead Lily Rose Depp refuted the chaos on the set, claiming that Levinson was kind to her while making the show.
