Streetsboro football's impact players

Cohen Klimak tried his hand at quarterbacking last year — and he was quite good at it. How good? Well, all the Rockets junior did was complete 65. 8 percent of his passes for 1,395 yards and three times as many touchdowns (18) as interceptions (six). Oh, and he was a force running the ball as well, with 189 carries for 1,400 yards and 12 more scores. With the addition of 25 pounds, the senior signal-caller should be just as effective a runner as he was before, but as a passer, he will have to deal with the loss of last year’s top target, Preston Hopperton, who transferred to Kent State. . . . One of the reasons why Klimak is so difficult to stop on the ground is the formidable line in front of him. Streetsboro’s returners up front include all-state lineman Arthur Scott III, who received multiple Division I offers over the summer, and Alex Light, who was an all-district performer in 2018. The Rockets averaged 10. 7 yards per carry when running behind the physically dominant Scott in 2023, Scott was Streetsboro’s highest graded lineman in nine of the first eleven games and did not give up a sack all year. Light also did not surrender a sack and was responsible for all the calls at the line the previous year. . . . On defense, the Rockets have a foundational piece in four-year starter Jackson Gula, an all-state honoree last year after racking up a team-high 105 tackles. The senior defensive back is only 15 tackles away from 300 career tackles and had a career best of three interceptions in the previous season. He is also a good pass catcher (15 receptions for 216 yards in 2023).

What is new in Streetsboro football in 2024

The Rockets have two sophomores to look out for in WR/RB/DB Adrian Monroe and RB/DB Marcus Council who transferred from Archbishop Hoban. . . . Standing 6-4 and weighing 250 pounds, freshman lineman Alan Podboy “will be in the mix for varsity playing time and is on the path to becoming a scholarship player,” Streetsboro coach Pete Thompson. . . . The Rockets also have a new defensive coordinator: Wezlee Spence. Although Spence is changing his title, he has been with the Rockets for a few years as their defensive line and strength and conditioning coach, so “we will not change our defensive scheme or terminology,” said Thompson. Spence played at North Canton Hoover before transferring to Baldwin Wallace where he played as a defensive end, Thompson described him as “one of the brightest young coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with.

Streetsboro football's outlook

After going 4-6 in both 2017 and 2018, the Rockets have been one of the best teams in Portage County with a record of 43-12. That includes a 10-win season last year, with a 6-1 mark in the Metro Athletic Conference. The Rockets have been a high-scoring team in the recent past, and the year 2023 was no different as they scored 44. 67 points per game and gained 19. 1 yards per completion and 8. 3 yards per carry. . . . Although Streetsboro had a sensational success through the air last year, its offense has always been grounded, and this year it will be headed by Klimak, Cook (42 carries, 233 yards), and Council. As with all good ground games, it all begins upfront. By that measure, the 2024 Rockets have a great chance to be successful. According to the coach Pete Thompson, “This has a chance to be one of the best overall offensive lines, if not the best, since I have been at Streetsboro. ” Junior tackles Cooper Richmond and Arthur Scott have multiple scholarship offers, Alex Light was an all-district player last year, Jon Ekron is another returning starter and the freshman Alan Podboy should also impress. . . . While the Rockets were a good team last year, the defense should improve after giving up 30+ points in each of the 2023 defeats. Look for Streetsboro’s linebackers, Cook, Herman, and Knuebel to be major contributors while Scott causes disruption on the interior and Gula anchors the defensive backfield.
