Westmoreland County high school notebook: Football season begins with ‘heat week’

Based on my own research and interviews, a PIAA tradition since the inception of the association in 2013, “heat week” is the unofficial beginning of high school football training camp and commences this Monday across the region.

Players, who wear a helmet and shoulder pad but cannot touch, need to sit through five straight days of heat acclimation before the introduction of contact practice.

Official practice begins on the August 12th.

“It is nice to be back on the field because it is the early days of this season,” Mt. Pleasant coach Jason Fazekas stated. Actually, heat camp is our first official practice to improve ourselves. “

Sometimes the coaches have to organize practices in stations where players cannot touch one another; In order to familiarize them with the conditions of the camp week, they add mandatory water break.

There will be scrimmages August 17 and the regular season will start with games on the week of August 23 branded as the week zero.
