Shrinking Renewed for Season 3 at Apple

Shrinking has told Apple that it wants to take more trimm Tara sessions.

The therapy comedy with Jason Segel has been picked up for a third season at the streaming service. It arrived on the heels of the show’s second season, which premiered on Tuesday.

Developed by Segel with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein – the last of whom also co-starred in a guest recurring role in the second season before becoming a series regular – the cast also features Harrison Ford in one of his earliest TV roles.

The renewal was revealed Thursday at New York Comic Con when Segel and Goldstein as well as Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley were attending the Main Stage panel for a talk about season two with the first two episodes of which are now available online.

“What a great privilege it is for me to be making Shrinking with such successful actors, writers and crew that are actually enhancing the work, ” said Lawrence, the show’s co-creator and executive producer. I am even more fortunate that they are persons I would wish to associate with in my spare time. The show received immense support and a special shout-out to Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. Most thankful for getting to continue building this show. Onward!”

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, added: “What has been fantastic is to see viewers all over the world start to embrace the memorable characters and the complex universe that Bill, Brett & Jason developed. We are looking forward to showing where life takes Jimmy, Paul, Liz, Gabby, Alice, Sean, Brian and Derek next as they grow, evolve, and hilariously deepen even more in Season Three.

Shrinking stars grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel) at the facility who begins to break the rules and speak his truth and tell his patients exactly how it is. He voids all of his training and a fair amount of his ethics to be making these huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. The first season left everyone on a cliff hanger after the season finale.

Lawrence and his writers have stated that they approached Apple with a three-Seasons series, Shrinking, however, in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter during the season two premiere, Lawrence said they may not stay at three.

“I was talking to my great partners at Apple,” he said in a story shown this week. Shrinking is a very nice show and if for whatever reason they continue to want to do it, then I would carry on doing Shrinking.” That’s why I just think that the story of Jason Segel’s character Jimmy’s wife dying and then him dealing with that and getting through that and if after six years he is saying I’m still sad about that thing that happened five years ago then I am like okay you gotta tell a new story.

Lawrence also recently finished up the first season of the Bad Monkey comedy, giving him three shows with Apple now including Ted Lasso, which is still TBD on a fourth season. “I’m going to politely say I’m in for whatever the captain of the ship wants me to be in for,” Lawrence added about Jason Sudeikis being the one who will ultimately spit the beans on whether or not Ted Lasso will do another season. “It will be a plan that is going to be implemented soon, but for now, the plan us not implemented,” said Goldstein, also from Ted Lasso, in a discussion with THR.

Segel on the other hand has only acted in Apple movie The Sky is Everywhere.

Shrinking is created for Apple TV+ by Warner Bros Television with Lawrence and Goldstein under overall deals with Warner Bros Television and Lawrence’s company Doozer Productions. Other showrunners include Lawrence, Segel; Goldstein; Neil Goldman; James Ponsoldt; Jeff Ingold; Liza Katzer; Randall Winston; Annie Mebane; Rachna Fruchbom; Brian Gallivan; Ashley Nicole Black & Bill Posley are the executive producers.

The first season of Shrinking airs new episodes weekly on Wednesdays and will run until the season 1 finale on December 25th on Apple TV+. Learn more of the season two discussion of THR with Lawrence.
