Melania Trump says Donald Trump 'knew my position and my beliefs' on abortion 'since the day we met'

Ex-first lady Melania Trump on Sunday sought to explain her views on abortion as presented in a book she is set to be coming out with and which appear to sharply diverge from those of her now ex-husband, the former president of the United States, Donald Trump.

Donald Trump knew my position and my beliefs since the day when we have met. I also happen to support freedom of the individual. I want to control what happens to my body. This I think I don’t want government in my personal business,” Melania Trump said during an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo who conducted a pretaped session on Sunday.

The comments are made less than a week after she released excerpts from her book where she said “It is now key to ensure that women are able to choose preference of having children or otherwise through their conviction and without any influence from the government’s interference.

“Why should anyone other than the woman have the right to make decisions on who she sleeps with in her own body?” Thus, a woman has the right of individual liberty, up to and including the right to decide whether or not she wants to continue a pregnancy, to live her own life,” she continued in the fictional memoir, “Melania”.

The former first lady also has also spoken about her opinions in the promotional video made for the book and placed on X last week.

“Freedom of each person is something that I protect as the value of the society. Of course, there are no shades of gray when it comes to this fundamental right which all women have from birth,” Melania Trump said in the video.

“Individual freedom. What does ‘my body, my choice?’ The political comment continued as she said:

That was the first time that the former first lady had spoken out on her opinions about abortion, which is an influential subject in the month before November as Democrats attempt to portray Trump as the candidate who seeks to ban abortions.

In Sunday’s interview, Melania Trump addressed questions she has faced after going public with her views so close to the election, telling Bartiromo: Well, that was not written in the last week, or the last month or the last year even, you know. That was written months ago and was in print months ago. So that was my belief, and it is my belief, and I wanted to put it in the book, because I want to be authentic.

Speaking to Bartiromo the former first lady was asked if she is concerned that the voters may switch from having positive perceptions about her husband given her opinions, she replied that she does not entertain worry. People everywhere need to come to some sort of understanding of what they are willing to do.

The former first lady said Donald Trump “knew” her position would be in the book, adding: He lets me be me and believes what I believe.” He lets me be my own person. And he does respect that, and I respect that as I let him be his own person. He has different beliefs and he will do what he believes.”

Melania Trump’s comments echoed her husband’s remarks to Fox News on Thursday, in which he said: ‘We talked about this and that’, and I told him, ‘You have to write what you think’. And now, I can’t tell you what to do. “That is the motto which has to be written: ‘You have to write what you believe.’”

“She’s very beloved,” he added. “They do adore our former first lady, I can assure you of that, but I told them, ‘You have to go with your gut.’ I’ve said that to everybody, ‘You have to go with your heart.’

On Wednesday, Trump writing on his Truth Social app accused pro-life activists of trying to force him into signing a bill banning abortion if he were the president. Initially, the former president didn’t express strong opinions on the matter but gradually the opinion shifted.

Late in May 2023, a thrilled Trump would welcome a Supreme Court ruling that will overturn the Roe v. Wade, using a tweet that I wrote, “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to overturn Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone.”

And when he was president, Trump asked the Senate to approve a bill that was already approved by the House to limit abortion to 20 weeks.

Now it is not a secret that the previous president had ideas on a 15 weeks federal ban. There are now weeks to it really — people now say 15, we are planning in terms of that framework, and it ends up to be a very reasonable figure. That is the case and the number– But people are really — even the hard liners are agreeing — seems to be 15 weeks, seems to be a number that people are agreeing at,” said Bloomberg during a WABC radio interview.

And in August Trump said in an interview with NBC News that Florida is “too short” six weeks ban on abortion that GOP Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law. Trump continued: “It has to be more time.”

A few days later, he qualified this statement meaning that he will actually vote this year against a Florida ballot measure that would enshrine a right to abortion up to viability.
