Mars boys basketball coach Rob Carmody resigns after 26 years

Mars boys basketball coach Rob Carmody resigns after 26 years

When Rob Carmody felt that now was the time to quit as the boys basketball coach of Mars, his son Robby had only one wish.

“He said, ‘Dad, I want to get in the gym with you one more time before this all happens,’” said Carmody, who got to spend one last time at the gym together with his son over the weekend. : “We got to have a good cry It is sad But at the same time, I know that I am doing the right thing to my family, for my business and to those kids who are in our program. ”

Carmody also stood down after 26 years as the Mars coach forging a near perfect record with the team which encompasses two WPIAL titles and two shot at the state finals.

But professionally he is an owner of an electroplating business that has been in his wife Stephanie’s family for thirty years. Whenever some of the older partners retire, there is always more work to be done, he said and now the firm is at that period.

It then posed him with the dilemma of either staying with family, working or coaching because one could not afford to do it all.

‘One cant just come in off the street and be able to do what we do,’ Carmody said; ‘It takes time and training . ’ “And no one could be the husband that I am to my wife or the father I am to my children, The one role that someone could undertake is being the coach at Mars. “

Carmody, 52, said it will not be his retirement from coaching. He said that he wants to become a coach again somewhere next time maybe as an assistant but could not afford to devote the time which is required for being head coach in the present.

He is coach with record of 408-235 of players.

“Until two weeks ago, I was still conducting open gyms,” said Carmody. “I was doing all that I can to give it a shot to achieve all that I want to do But it gets to a point where you know you can’t anymore. … I would never want someone to give less of their effort just because my child is not in their team, so I can’t do that too. ”

Robby and Michael his sons used to play basketball for him. The two played on WPIAL championship team in 2018 and Michael made it again the following year after his partner Robby graduated. The Planets has performed in state level and reached the runners up in the year 2016 and 2018.

Carmody wrote about his resignation via the social network on Tuesday evening. In his announcement, Carmody said that Mars made its 17th straight trip to the WPIAL playoffs last winter, and has won nine section titles in the past 15 years.

He also found out 13 Mars players who have had more than 1000 points of production since 2006.

In the X social network site, Carmody posted a message which read, “Thank you to all of the guys who have worn the Mars uniform over the years: it is through your talent, dedication and toughness that our program is what it is today. ”

Robby, who has scored 2,000 points for the Mars, Le Moyne has on its team a post-graduate transfer. College basketball was played by him at Notre Dame and Mercer. Today’s player is Michael, the redshirt junior lineman of UCLA transferred from Notre Dame. A third Carmody sibling is at the Penn State university pursing his/her college education.

Carmody is currently in his twelfth season as the Mars boy’s basketball coach, a position he took in 1998 at the age of 26 with the barest of prep basketball glory on his resume. He also spent four seasons at North Catholic where he served as an assistant coach after which he got his first head coaching job. Before that he was playing college basketball for Westminster College.

Looking at him, I asked him some of my questions together with the aforesaid statements: “I began basketball when I was in fourth grade,” he responded. “It’s been love affair of lifetime. ”

Carmody was happy that Mars has eight letter-winners and three starters from the playoff team last season and that the youth has over 180 boys. He also got a full support from the school’s administration and the community as well.

“I took the job, and immediately my wife and I said, ‘We want to raise our kids here,’” Carmody said. “Mars went from being something that I knew nothing of and became a home to me, and that is why I absolutely want the best for these kids. ”
