Mark your calendar for these 10 must-watch District 10 high school football games in 2024

District 10 football regular season is one month away and 38 teams fight for their right to be called state champs. Following exhibition games on August 17 th in which the players have warm up scrimmages, the fixtures are scheduled the subsequent weekend, August 23 rd and 24 rd.

They are new regions this year and teams have also made movements between different classification. There is nothing like rivalry games, games for new rivalry, or games that are on the brink of creating a new rivalry that can be seen over the 10 weeks.

Here is a look at 10 games to watch this fall:Here is a look at 10 games to watch this fall:

Hickory at Farrell

August 24:The two teams performance is a good kick start of the season for two high powered teams. They do play each other on the first Saturday of the season; however, the game is played as a non-region game. It is the measuring stick game for both teams as Farrell lost many players on the team due to graduation and transfers while Hickory resumes the team that can produce the deep run in PIAA playoffs in Class 3A.

Cathedral Prep at Sharon

Aug. 30: The Ramblers also stated it in one way in Week 10 by handing out a 44-18 defeat to Farrell. For years the question has been raised if powerhouses out of Mercer County could challenge prep and McDowell up north. Sharon had this year to get that chance with what looks to be an early season home game against the Ramblers.

Erie at McDowell

September 12; The only game of the year that will positively be a preview of District 10 championship. Erie and McDowell play each other next for the D-10 Class 6A championship after the season but this is a preview of what could happen in the playoffs. This will be a big-time game on a Thursday night; like I said, this is the real deal: McDowell has been crushing Stoudemire the last couple of years.

Sharon at Hickory

Sept. 13: This will be another rematch of giants of District 10 football power houses. The Tigers and Hornets both bring back experienced teams this year which would make this one of the best games of the year. It is wilderness warfare in nearly all areas, and football is classic confrontation every time.

Slippery Rock at Grove City is one of the most attractive events in this championship.

Sept. 14: The casserole battle of the night comes from the souther section of District 10. The Rockets and the Eagles are neighboring teams; the highlight of their schedule is when they both play against each other. These two teams have had some classic instant games in the last few years and may well be meeting for a region determinative game this fall.

McDowell at Cathedral Prep

Oct. 4 (Veterans Stadium): In my option there is nothing that comes close to a Prep-McDowell rivalry. Even in any game/match of their selected sports, these two teams could face each other and the game/match would attract large audience. As with any other team, one of the more compelling narratives this year was the degree of talent each powerhouse said goodbye to in the summer. At the start of the match there could be a lot of first time experiences especially with the newly appointed McDowell head coach Aaron Slocum.

Wilmington at Reynolds

Oct. 5: This cycle witnessed Wilmington demoting to Class 1A and thus having several possibilities heading into the D-10 Class 1A playoffs. The Greyhounds have been used to winning while Reynolds has dominated Class 1A competition in the past. The two teams face each other in early October and both could be on course meeting in the playoffs.

Meadville at General McLane

October 10: Meadville has steadily reined Class 4A football for several years and is again well manned this fall. The main obstacle in the Bulldogs bid for another D-10 championship title could well be General McLane. The Lancers are coming up from Class 3A this cycle and have been getting better each year under Marshall McCormick. Since all the 4A teams are in the same region, the remaining games until the treasured D-10 championship will be a repeat of the games in the regular season.

Sharpsville at Farrell

Oct. 11: Mercer County Schools’ featured football teams, the Blue Devils, with a rich tradition in football, are stressing against the aggressively competitive Steelers. They have both become the dominate Class 2A schools in the south and could very well meet again in the D-10 final this coming fall. Mercyhurst Prep has also been a force to mold in Class 2A but the Lakers here lost a lot of players from the previous year.

Cambridge Springs at Lakeview

October 18: Cambridge Springs and Lakeview schools are always on the field primarily fighting within their respective counties. They both are contenders in Class 1A now and the past few years have been a complete game changer. Both the teams met twice last year and are expected to meet in regions this year, giving two instant classics last year. The match on October, 18 could be final for the Region 2 champion.
