Joaquin Phoenix Recalls Lady Gaga Spitting Up Coffee the First Time I Sang in Joker Folie à Deux

Lady Gaga‘s initial reaction to Joaquin Phoenix singing in Joker: You can be sure that Folie à Deux is easily one that he will not wish to recall in the near future.

The actor who is coming back as Arthur Fleck/Joker in the director Todd Phillips’ musical sequel of 2019 film Joker recently spilled the beans about his experience of singing in front of the pop icon and Grammy-winning singer who plays the character of Lee/Harley Quinn in the movie.

“Now I do seem to recall her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that was great, that was fun and made me feel good,” Phoenix said to Empire magazine.

He and the lady who performed ‘Shallow’ proceeded to practice together to establish a musical beat of the characters in the much-anticipated movie.

“Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine’,” Phoenix said. “For somebody who is not a performer in that manner it could be… awkward to do that, but at the same time thrilling to do that. ”

The Beau Is Afraid actor also spoke about the meaning of songs for the protagonist, to which it suddenly became important for Arthur Fleck: “He has music in him”, according to Phillips in the first part.

‘It was important to protect that with poor phrasing and occasional bum notes,’ Phoenix added. “Arthur grew up hearing his mother play these songs on the radio. He is not a singer and should not sing like a professional singer on radio. He is supposed to be a guy who is in the shower suddenly sing out.

Joker: Folie à Deux releases on Oct. 4, and it revolves around failed comedian Arthur Fleck finding his significant other in Harley Quinn while being detained at Arkham State Hospital. After liberating him, the two proceed to what seems to be a typically damning love story.

Last week, Gaga also informed Empire how she altered their singing voice on her adaptation of Harley Quinn in the movie saying it was “nothing like I have ever done before.

“You see me here as Lady Gaga but that is the performer part of me not the actress and this movie isn’t going to be about Lady Gaga, it is about the character that I am going to be playing,” she said. “Thus, I tried very hard to see the manner in which I sang emerging from Lee and not from me as a singer. ”
