Iowa high school football rankings: The Gazette’s 2024 post-Week 7 poll

Five weeks from that revelation, Williamsburg crests back to No. 1 in the Class 3A rankings for football.

Off the strength of a 42-13 drubbing of Solon on Friday — along with Humboldt’s victory over Algona three nights earlier — the Raiders returned to the No. 3 spot in the 3A Gazette poll.

Led by sophomore quarterback Collin Hoffman, Williamsburg, the reigning 3A state champion and 6-1 overall, have won five in a row after a Week 2 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Raiders have managed an average of 52.8 points for every game in that sequence.

Williamsburg has two more games in the regular season left to play, both of which are against Grinnell this week and at Benton Community next week. It’s 5-2 for both teams and Benton is new to the 3A rankings this week at No. 9.

Come four of the six first-place tallies, while co-No. 2 Dubuque Wahlert and No. 5 Humboldt took the other first-place vote hostage.

Wahlert is second overall and tied with Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Those are the only two teams who are unbeaten in 3A competition. Ottosen is No. 6, followed by a tie between Mount Vernon and Humboldt and a tie between Bishop and Algona.

Above the other six classes remain the same except.

In 5A, it stays the same with west Des Moines Valley ahead of west Des Moines Dowling by 56-55 in poll points . Dowling got four first choices, and Valley, two.

The last 5A unbeaten, Bettendorf is No 3 followed by Pleasant Valley and Ankeny Centennial.

Linn-Mar, Iowa City Liberty, and Iowa City High all stand at 7-8-9. City High has had their back against the wall, having started the season at 0-2 but the team has since geared up to notch five consecutive victories.

The Titans literally have a chokehold on 4A but No. 2 Pella swiped a first-place ballot from LC. The top five schools are North Polk, Decorah, ADM from Adel and Xavier in the fifth place.

The same teams makes up the top seven this week in 2A. Above it, we have West Lyon, Monroe PCM, Spirit Lake, Van Meter and Carroll Kuemper.

So it came as no surprise that Class 1A No. 1 Grundy Center picked up their 33rd straight win by defeating Alburnett 41-13. Wilton is No. 2 in the poll as it sits for a game against No. 9 Iowa City Regina. Next we have Dike-New Hartford in the no. 3 position alongside Emmetsburg followed by south Hardin at no. 5.

New to the top five, Class A experienced some notable shake up in the second five, but the list is still topped by West Hancosk, Guthrie Center ACGC and Saint Ansgar. Lisbon is fifth and Tri-Center sixth.

The top six teams in 8-Player are all 7-0. Remsen St. Mary’s are on the top in this group, out of which some include Algona Garrigan, Don Bosco, Lenox, Audubon, Iowa Valley etc.

That is the Gazette’s poll of football teams that appeared after the completion of Week 7.
