Everything to know about Dawn Staley's South Carolina basketball freshmen for 2024-25 season

There are three players in the South Carolina women’s basketball team described as freshmen for the season 2024/2025 year.

The defending national champions and coach Dawn Staley should get assistant from Joyce Edwards, Maddy McDaniel and Adhel Tac. From last season South Carolina only lost it’s star center Kamilla Cardoso who transferred to the WNBA.

Related to the high school performance, Edwards was the No. 3 prospect in the 2024 class according to ESPN, followed by McDaniel who was ranked the No. 14, and Tac the No. 28. Tac could not play during the 2023-24 season anymore due to his knee injury hence did not play, taking the redshirt year.

This is information gathering on the three and the role they might play in the lineup of the 2024-25 season.

Joyce Edwards, forward

Similarly as Edwards, learn also the various versatility of a player that can play on many positions on both offense and defense. At 6-foot-2, she puts it in from everywhere and was averaging 31. The attack of this player is going to benefit Team USA immensely. 3 points in her last year in high school basketball. She is also a great forward, like a guard, she is tall & can front a post straight up & shut down someone speedy. Her talents and skill therefore adapts well to the South Carolina game, and this equals to heavy minutes of the bench.

The girl has height and she is effective when she takes a shot near the basket but she also is not limited to painting only.

During June this year, Edwards led the United States in 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup in Bucaramanga, Colombia and had a field average of 14. 2 points per game and was named Tournament MVP.

She was awarded as the Gatorade Player of the year 2023-2024 and a McDonald’s All-American and Naismith All-American First-team member. Currently in June she was awarded the MaxPreps Female National Athlete of the Year for the year 2023-24.

Maddy McDaniel, guard

The good thing for South Carolina: McDaniel is not needed by Staley immediately, implying that she would grow into a starter over time; possibly, she will be beginning as early as 2025-26 no Te-Hina Paopao.

The bad thing for McDaniel: As for her minutes in the current season, they are remain unknown, yet, they cannot be termed as excessive by any means.

McDaniel, 5-9, is fast and skillfull player who has been added to the guards. He also maintained that McDaniel suffered a knee injury in playoffs of Bishop McNamara High School, Upper Marlboro, Maryland while the young player had surgery in February as a result of a torn meniscus. During the time of juniorn season she scored an average of 18. 6 points, 5. 4 assists, 5. 2 steals and 4. 3 rebounds per game.

However, it will be difficult for McDaniel this season because Tessa Johnson and MiLaysia Fulwiley, strong players, will most likely be in a higher position as second-year players; However, in the future, it is believed that she will also become a shining star of South Carolina.

Adhel Tac, forward

Tac signed from Carson Newman university as a forward/center with a height of 6-5; as a result, her rating as a freshman is slightly closer to a sophomore since she was exposed to learning from and watching the Gamecocks most of the last season.

In any case, Tac has yet to see the game for the University of South Carolina but promises to bear the burden of minutes with no Cardoso. Whether or not she is fully back from this remains to be seen, but from a health perspective she should be a skilled presence down low.

She will compete for minutes in the paint with Ashlyn Watkins Chloe Kitts, Edwards, Sania Feagin, and Sakima Walker but she has a year studying how the Gamecocks play and last year is not a bad year to model after.
