5 Takeaways from Bishop Gorman's victory over St. Thomas Aquinas
If you take two great known players and put them on the field this is going to attract people’s attention.
They did in the Broward County National Football Showcase as can be seen below; On Saturday, in the first of two primary games to air live on ESPN and ESPN+, the top-ranked Bishop Gorman Friars edged St. Thomas Aquinas with 29-21.
The game was as close as it could get and the end saw Gaels come out on top.
Indorf, the long ignored quarterback of Aquinas has now reserved his place in the limelight.
Despite being the quarterback of the Raiders football team that has won the previous five state championships, Andrew Indorf has been left out by big shot colleges.
Indorf plays only what he is able to play and that also on the football field. Playing against such powerful team as Bishop Gorman, the St. Thomas senior was 20-of-37 passing for 198 yards and two scores. Now, he again was brought down twice in the second half, once in the end zone during the closing moments of the match in which his team was trying to drive towards an overtime.
“That quarterback is really, really good,” said Brent Browner, a Gorman coach. He has probably the most underrated quarterback playing in Florida; in the rankings, he is probably not even of top ten, but I think that he is quite good.
Indorf does not seem to mind the lack of recognition too much and she is now determined to moved St. Thomas toward the right direction.
“To be honest, I do not really worry about it,” as Indorf laughed when she spoke about the fact that she is not ranked. “My teammates believe in me I just go out there and do my thing. If scouts or fans do not see it, it does not bother me. I am happy that I have my team with me so that is okay. ”
What may have been a fatal blow in lesser hands merely caused Bishop Gorman to reassess all of their options.
ranked Bishop Gorman as the number two team in the nation making them one of the best in the country. It’s for a reason.
It was during the third quarter that the Gaels were outplayed and trailed 21-10 However during the fourth quarter.
That is the conduct of those nationals championship-caliber clubs.
When they were on the ground the Gaels were not intimidated. Some of their drives have been stopped by penalties, mistake and the likes. Still, they stayed within easy reach .
“Well,” Browner said of playing in high profile games “the kids are just used to it. ” “This is nothing new. Being down and being up, and being in a close game, they bonded together. ”
The upward mobility of wide receiver Julius Jones on such defining moment for the Raiders
Having so many options at his disposal, Indorf can chose many players that he has at his disposal to enable him to effectively move the football.
The receiver who gained most of the focus on saturday was Julius Jones. The sophomore was rated four-star and it was clear why everything that he was going to do was going to be so bright.
Jones caught 11 passes for 110 yards, and emerged Indorf’s favourite target during the last moments of the match.
In the final minute and trailing by eight St. Thomas was in the red zone and Jones almost had a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone.
“It was such close combat; I then thought I [almost] had it,” Jones said. “It was a great play by him”, I came down, had it in my hand, “He played through the ball It was a great play by him. ”
Monmouth’s Gorman QB Melvin Spice completes scoring passes
Lightning fast, Bishop Gorman has the capability of battering down their opponents with brute force behind their massive line. In the game the Gaels ran for 246 yards.
However, it was in air, some passes by Melvin Spice, a Gael’s quarterback that led to the team’s come back.
Moving to the final stages of the third quarter, Spice completed a 30 yard pass through Kaina Watson and scored a touchdown which made the lead of St. Thomas 21-17 only.
and the first quarter spiced up his moment with Derek Meadows the receiver and they completed a 41 yard scoring pass.
Meadows who was heading to LSU, managed to grab the ball while two St. Thomas defenders in the game clashed in a spot that was way above six foot – six.
St. Thomas Aquinas is elevated to prominence on national level
The result may not have be in favour of St. Thomas Aquinas, however the school locked its position as one of the top ten football playing institutions in the nation.
Raiders challenged the defending national champions in Bishop Gorman.
A year ago St. Thomas Aquinas was defeated in Broward Showcase match to St. John Bosco that defeated Chaminade-Madonna in the second game on Saturday night by a score 34-27.
St. Thomas, and Indorf particularly, was a lot better on Saturday, and the Raiders will be the favorite to win the sixth straight state championship.
“It has provided a nice platform where we demonstrated that we are one of the top squads in the country,” Indorf added. “We created our brand. ”
